About Sport-Based Youth Development

Sport-Based Youth Development, also known as SBYD, is about more than just athletic development. In SBYD, the focus is placed on building positive relationships, social & emotional skills, and creating safe spaces. There is an intentional use of sport to contribute to the growth of youth in all communities. Up2Us VISTA Host Sites are using SBYD as a vehicle for change.

Up2Us Host Sites serve communities that are typically over looked. These communities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Low-Income Youth

  • Homeless Populations

  • Non-English Speakers

  • People with Disabilities

  • LGBTQ+ Communities

  • Refugees

  • Women and Girls

  • Immigrants

Benefits of SBYD

Safe spaces are created

Kids can feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and try again. They have a safe place to express emotion.

Coaches serve as role models

The examples that coaches set go beyond demonstrating athletic ability. Coaches are a positive example of how to act and behave.

Practices are intentional

Programs are well administered
